Who is acting?

San Blas pumping station and Valle de Güímar connection move toward tender

The Canary Islands Government announced the forthcoming tender of the new San Blas wastewater pumping station and its connection to the Valle de Güímar treatment plant. This is a later implementation milestone following the funding and cooperation agreement already announced in March 2026.

This infrastructure action does not in itself imply any change in current bathing-water quality.

Candelaria remains included in an EU wastewater infringement procedure

Official documentation from the Government of the Canary Islands states that the coastal agglomerations Candelaria-Caletillas, Candelaria-Punta Larga and Candelaria Casco are included in infringement procedure 2016/2134 concerning Directive 91/271/EEC. Sanitation works and connection to the Valle de Güímar system form part of the measures intended to resolve these failures.

The information comes from a Canary administrative document that cites the European procedure. It does not describe water quality at a given moment.

Agreement to route Candelaria's wastewater to the Valle de Güímar district treatment plant

Agreement between the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, the island water council and Candelaria town council to build the San Blas pumping station and the pipeline to the Valle de Güímar treatment plant. The total budget is €8,384,906.06, fully funded by the regional government across 2026, 2027 and 2028.

CJEU finds further breaches of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive affecting Tenerife

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Spain had failed to fulfil several obligations under Directive 91/271/EEC in a number of agglomerations covered by case C-433/23, several of them located in Tenerife. The judgment concerns obligations linked to the collection, treatment and monitoring of urban waste water.

A European judgment records past failures and requires them to be corrected. It does not by itself state the situation at any beach on the day it is consulted.

Coastal sanitation improvements completed in three areas of Candelaria

Candelaria Town Council and the Cabildo de Tenerife completed sanitation works in three coastal areas of the municipality, carried out to address insufficient or missing sewer infrastructure. The works improved wastewater collection along the coast and included a new pumping station and pressure pipeline, with an investment of approximately €837,967.

The completion of sanitation infrastructure does not by itself indicate the current bathing-water quality of nearby beaches.

European Commission refers Spain to the CJEU over wastewater failures affecting Tenerife

The European Commission took Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union over failures to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment. The case covers several agglomerations in Tenerife, among them Adeje-Arona, Añaza, Candelaria, Golf del Sur, Guía de Isora Litoral, La Esperanza-La Laguna Sur-Santa Cruz-Valles, Puerto de Santiago-Playa la Arena, San Isidro-Litoral, Sueño Azul and Valle de la Orotava.

An infringement procedure is brought against Spain and describes unfulfilled obligations at agglomeration level, not the water quality at a beach on a given day. The required works and connections fall to different administrations.
