Who is acting?

Western Tenerife reinforces maintenance of its sanitation network

The Island Water Council tenders the operation, conservation and repair of the regional sanitation system between Santiago del Teide and Guía de Isora for three years. The network connects several settlements in western Tenerife and conveys wastewater to the Oeste treatment plant (EDAR Oeste).

An operation and maintenance contract on existing infrastructure. It is not linked to any bathing incident and does not in itself imply any change in water quality.

200 tonnes of wet wipes removed from the sewer network in southern Tenerife

Entemanser has removed around 200 tonnes of wet wipes and other waste from the 34 wastewater pumping stations it operates in Adeje, Guía de Isora and Granadilla de Abona during 2026. The work has required more than 6,500 hours. A build-up of this waste can reduce pump efficiency, cause blockages and, in serious cases, contribute to sewage overflows or discharges.

Tenerife Oeste wastewater treatment system enters operation

The new Tenerife Oeste treatment plant and associated sanitation system entered its operational phase. The system is designed for approximately 109,000 population equivalent and includes the San Juan treatment and pumping facilities, four wastewater pumping stations and associated pipelines.

This infrastructure action does not in itself imply any change in current bathing-water quality.

€7 million contract awarded to connect Chío to Tenerife Oeste sanitation system

ACUAES awarded works to connect Chío to the Tenerife Oeste sanitation system. The project includes approximately 5.3 kilometres of main collector infrastructure and the connection from Chío.

CJEU finds further breaches of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive affecting Tenerife

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Spain had failed to fulfil several obligations under Directive 91/271/EEC in a number of agglomerations covered by case C-433/23, several of them located in Tenerife. The judgment concerns obligations linked to the collection, treatment and monitoring of urban waste water.

A European judgment records past failures and requires them to be corrected. It does not by itself state the situation at any beach on the day it is consulted.

European Commission refers Spain to the CJEU over wastewater failures affecting Tenerife

The European Commission took Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union over failures to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment. The case covers several agglomerations in Tenerife, among them Adeje-Arona, Añaza, Candelaria, Golf del Sur, Guía de Isora Litoral, La Esperanza-La Laguna Sur-Santa Cruz-Valles, Puerto de Santiago-Playa la Arena, San Isidro-Litoral, Sueño Azul and Valle de la Orotava.

An infringement procedure is brought against Spain and describes unfulfilled obligations at agglomeration level, not the water quality at a beach on a given day. The required works and connections fall to different administrations.
