Who is acting?

New phase of the La Esperanza–Llano del Moro sewer collector

The Cabildo de Tenerife and El Rosario Town Council are carrying out a new phase of the sewer network on calle El Sino, within the La Esperanza–Llano del Moro main collector. The works add more than one kilometre of separate foul and stormwater networks and allow wastewater to be carried towards the main collector and the district treatment system.

This infrastructure action does not in itself imply any change in current bathing-water quality.

Damaged sewer network repaired in Tabaiba Baja

A landslip seriously damaged a section of the municipal sewer network in Tabaiba Baja. The Town Council carried out an emergency repair, reconnected the wastewater pipeline and removed the temporary system used during the incident.

Water checks were carried out after the repair before the bathing restrictions were reviewed.

CJEU finds further breaches of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive affecting Tenerife

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Spain had failed to fulfil several obligations under Directive 91/271/EEC in a number of agglomerations covered by case C-433/23, several of them located in Tenerife. The judgment concerns obligations linked to the collection, treatment and monitoring of urban waste water.

A European judgment records past failures and requires them to be corrected. It does not by itself state the situation at any beach on the day it is consulted.

New EU court action includes numerous Tenerife wastewater agglomerations

A new action brought by the European Commission before the Court of Justice covers numerous agglomerations in Tenerife for possible failures to meet obligations on the collection and treatment of urban waste water. The agglomerations cited include Buenavista del Norte, El Sauzal, Garachico-La Caleta, Icod de los Vinos, La Matanza, La Victoria, Las Galletas-Las Rosas, Radazul, San Miguel, Tabaiba, Tamaimo and Valle San Lorenzo.

The list of agglomerations cited is not necessarily complete. A pending procedure does not by itself mean a beach is closed or that a specific point is currently polluted.

European Commission refers Spain to the CJEU over wastewater failures affecting Tenerife

The European Commission took Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union over failures to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment. The case covers several agglomerations in Tenerife, among them Adeje-Arona, Añaza, Candelaria, Golf del Sur, Guía de Isora Litoral, La Esperanza-La Laguna Sur-Santa Cruz-Valles, Puerto de Santiago-Playa la Arena, San Isidro-Litoral, Sueño Azul and Valle de la Orotava.

An infringement procedure is brought against Spain and describes unfulfilled obligations at agglomeration level, not the water quality at a beach on a given day. The required works and connections fall to different administrations.

Tabaiba wastewater pumping station relocated and upgraded

The Tabaiba wastewater pumping station was relocated and upgraded to improve wastewater collection and allow additional buildings to connect to the sewer network rather than relying on septic or infiltration systems.
