Tejina residents renew their demands over the Cueva Negra discharges

The residents' association Las Tres Calles de Tejina has again called for solutions to the problems it reports around the discharges and the Cueva Negra outfall, on the Valle de Guerra coast. According to the association, it has raised this situation for years and has put its demands to the competent authorities once more.

CJEU finds further breaches of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive affecting Tenerife

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Spain had failed to fulfil several obligations under Directive 91/271/EEC in a number of agglomerations covered by case C-433/23, several of them located in Tenerife. The judgment concerns obligations linked to the collection, treatment and monitoring of urban waste water.

A European judgment records past failures and requires them to be corrected. It does not by itself state the situation at any beach on the day it is consulted.

New household connections to the sewer network

La Laguna has started works to connect homes that were not yet linked to the public sewer network. The aim is to allow more wastewater to be collected by the network and carried to the treatment plants.

This infrastructure action does not in itself imply any change in current bathing-water quality.

Punta del Hidalgo wastewater treatment plant modernised

The modernisation of the Punta del Hidalgo wastewater treatment plant increased its treatment capacity from around 850 to 1,200 cubic metres per day. The works also allow the treated water to be reclaimed for later reuse.

This wastewater treatment infrastructure action does not in itself imply any change in current bathing-water quality.

European Commission refers Spain to the CJEU over wastewater failures affecting Tenerife

The European Commission took Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union over failures to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment. The case covers several agglomerations in Tenerife, among them Adeje-Arona, Añaza, Candelaria, Golf del Sur, Guía de Isora Litoral, La Esperanza-La Laguna Sur-Santa Cruz-Valles, Puerto de Santiago-Playa la Arena, San Isidro-Litoral, Sueño Azul and Valle de la Orotava.

An infringement procedure is brought against Spain and describes unfulfilled obligations at agglomeration level, not the water quality at a beach on a given day. The required works and connections fall to different administrations.
