Water quality in Adeje

A photovoltaic self-consumption installation at the Adeje–Arona wastewater treatment plant was completed in May 2026. The project had an awarded value of approximately €442,980 and reduces the external electricity demand of the wastewater treatment infrastructure.

The installation supports wastewater treatment infrastructure but does not by itself imply a change in bathing water quality.

A press report described the situation along the southern coast of Tenerife (Los Cristianos, Las Vistas, El Camisón and Playa de las Américas) during storm Therese, with debris and wipes in the water and accounts from lifeguards and beachgoers. The article expressly states that the beaches remained open under red flags and were not sealed off. It also notes that the Ministry of Health recorded at least 29 short-duration contamination incidents in the Canary Islands in 2024. No official bathing ban is documented for this episode, so the entry is recorded as context and affects no score.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge requested more detailed technical information on how wastewater and stormwater generated by the Cuna del Alma development in El Puertito de Adeje would be managed. The requested information includes the destination and treatment of wastewater, whether an existing or new treatment plant would be used, how the additional treatment load would be handled, and contingency measures for accidental discharges. The request forms part of the project's environmental assessment process.

REWAISE’s Tenerife Living Lab focuses on sustainable desalination and brine valorisation. In La Caleta, Adeje, Aqualia-Entemanser’s WAVE centre, opened in June 2025 with municipal support, conducts research in this field. The October 2026 report on REWAISE’s conclusion includes the work carried out in Tenerife.

Around 900,000 euros was allocated to the emergency repair of an impulsion pipe in the Adeje–Arona regional system. This infrastructure transports wastewater within the sanitation system, and its correct operation is important for reducing the risk of incidents and discharges.

The Island Council began remodelling and extending the Adeje–Arona submarine outfall, with an investment of over 4 million euros. The works extend the pipeline by about 200 metres and place the discharge point roughly 1,100 metres from the coast at more than 40 metres depth. This infrastructure is associated with the discharge from the Adeje–Arona desalination system; it is not an untreated sewage outfall.

Official infrastructure planning included new pumping and transport works intended to improve the transfer of wastewater from western Adeje towards the regional Adeje–Arona treatment system. The programme includes infrastructure affecting areas such as Sueño Azul, Playa Paraíso and Callao Salvaje. Documented measures include new or upgraded wastewater pumping infrastructure and pressure pipelines designed to improve wastewater transport within the regional sanitation network.

This infrastructure programme concerns wastewater collection and transport. It does not indicate the bathing water quality of any individual beach on the day it is consulted.
