Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense has proposed creating a joint sanitation coordination group involving Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Los Realejos and Santa Úrsula to coordinate assessments, needs and actions related to the regional wastewater system.
The proposal calls for stronger coordination between municipalities and closer monitoring of sanitation infrastructure and water quality. It is a civil society initiative and has not been approved as an official government programme.

Six major projects to reduce wastewater discharges in Tenerife

New Valle de La Orotava district treatment plant: tender and award
The Cabildo de Tenerife put the new Valle de La Orotava district wastewater treatment plant out to tender in May 2025 for €25 million. In February 2026, the Island Water Council awarded construction to the Sacyr Ingeniería and Sacyr Agua joint venture for €17.5 million with a 37-month execution period. The facility will treat 10,000 m³/day using membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology with 20,000 m³/day pretreatment, serving over 100,000 residents.

More than 45,000 euros in fines for sea discharges in Puerto de la Cruz
A May 2025 report compiled the sanction proceedings opened by the Canary Islands Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment against Puerto de la Cruz Town Council for discharges to the sea, then totalling around EUR 45,000 in acknowledged fines, including proceedings over the overflow outlets at Playa Jardín, Playa Chica and El Caletón, plus earlier sanctions from 2018 and 2022. The Tenerife Island Water Council was also sanctioned. The report traces the origin of the problem to the break in the Valle de La Orotava district treatment plant outfall since July 2020 and notes that the municipality's main beaches remained closed for close to a year. It is recorded as context and accountability reporting; it creates no new scored incident.

Addendum raising Tenerife sanitation and treatment investment to €233.5 million
The ACUAES board authorised the addendum with the Cabildo de Tenerife and the island water council, partly financed by the EU ERDF. Planned investment in the island's sanitation and treatment systems rises to €233.5 million.
