Candelaria Town Council has started improvement works around Playa de Olegario, following the contract award in September. The project includes stormwater drainage upgrades, renewal of sewer connections and water-supply networks, accessibility improvements and repaving of the waterfront. Drainage and sanitation improvement works begin at Playa de Olegario
Candelaria Town Council announced the start of works on Monday 26 October. The total investment is €895,324.96 and the expected execution period is eight months. Works include drainage improvements on Calle La Piscina, renewal of water-supply and irrigation networks and sewer connections, accessibility improvements, and repaving of the waterfront and the sidewalk on Calle La Piscina.

Playa de Olegario refurbishment contract awarded
The council announced the award to Construplan y Planificación S.L.U. for €836,752.30 plus €58,572.66 IGIC. The project covers drainage, water-supply and irrigation networks, sewer connections, accessibility and waterfront repaving, with an eight-month execution period.

Prosecutors seek prison sentences over discharges from the Valle de Guimar industrial estate
According to the published reports, in August 2026 the public prosecutor filed charges against four mayors and former mayors over discharges from the Valle de Güímar industrial estate: Carmen Luisa Castro (mayor of Güímar), María Concepción Brito (mayor of Candelaria), José Gumersindo García Trujillo (former mayor of Candelaria) and José Juan Lemes Expósito (former mayor of Arafo). The alleged offences are dereliction of duty by omission and an environmental offence, with four years in prison and thirteen years of disqualification sought. The trial is set for 8 February 2027 at the Provincial Court. These are charges awaiting trial, not proven facts. No specific beach is identified and no official closure order is linked to these proceedings.

Candelaria remains included in an EU wastewater infringement procedure
Official documentation from the Government of the Canary Islands states that the coastal agglomerations Candelaria-Caletillas, Candelaria-Punta Larga and Candelaria Casco are included in infringement procedure 2016/2134 concerning Directive 91/271/EEC. Sanitation works and connection to the Valle de Güímar system form part of the measures intended to resolve these failures.

CJEU finds further breaches of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive affecting Tenerife
The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Spain had failed to fulfil several obligations under Directive 91/271/EEC in a number of agglomerations covered by case C-433/23, several of them located in Tenerife. The judgment concerns obligations linked to the collection, treatment and monitoring of urban waste water.
A European judgment records past failures and requires them to be corrected. It does not by itself state the situation at any beach on the day it is consulted.

Coastal sanitation improvements completed in three areas of Candelaria
Candelaria Town Council and the Cabildo de Tenerife completed sanitation works in three coastal areas of the municipality, carried out to address insufficient or missing sewer infrastructure. European Commission refers Spain to the CJEU over wastewater failures affecting Tenerife
The European Commission took Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union over failures to comply with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment. The case covers several agglomerations in Tenerife, among them Adeje-Arona, Añaza, Candelaria, Golf del Sur, Guía de Isora Litoral, La Esperanza-La Laguna Sur-Santa Cruz-Valles, Puerto de Santiago-Playa la Arena, San Isidro-Litoral, Sueño Azul and Valle de la Orotava.
An infringement procedure is brought against Spain and describes unfulfilled obligations at agglomeration level, not the water quality at a beach on a given day. The required works and connections fall to different administrations.
